I grew up painfully shy.
Just between us, the thought of all eyes on me as I walked down the aisle at my own wedding sent me into a mini-panic attack.
So we had a private ceremony.
If you’d told me then that seven years later I would host a half-day event for 63 people (and with a microphone!), deliver a TED-style talk telling my personal story on stage, and be interviewed live on the morning news, I’d have laughed in your face.
Or possibly marveled that this alternate reality might exist.
It wasn’t until I went through my friend and mentor Alexia Vernon’s speaker training only this past year that all that changed.
You may not be able to relate, but I’ve heard that public speaking is the number 1 fear, even before death. (Whoda thunk?)
Regardless of whether you’re an introvert, extrovert, or just plain fumble your words when put on the spot, most of us feel anxious when standing in front of a crowd.
From Painfully Shy to On-Stage
You owe it to your future audience, all those people that your story will irrevocably alter, to stand up and share your message.
Whether you are filming YouTube vlogs or taking the stage for a TED talk, confidence comes from a connection to your body – standing tall and being grounded in your own power.
Good news! You can use food to generate the powerful but grounded energy necessary to deliver the best speech of your life.
In fact, the meal plan I shared in this article would work equally well for a day of public speaking.
Eating to fuel a TED Talk
You know that nervous energy that comes up at the very thought of standing in front of a crowd? Most people feel a physical sensation in their body, often interpreted as fear.
Think of food as a tool to help you generate power and harness that sensation.
Choose meals made of high-energy fresh foods to keep an upbeat vibe. But – in order to dissipate some of that sensation – also include heartier foods to ground yourself.
A Breakfast Recipe for the Morning of Your Talk!
The high-energy fruit in this breakfast smoothie is anchored by green veggies and Omega-boosting hempseed.
I created this recipe for a client who has public speaking at the top of her list for business growth, and I know it will help you out, too. Here is a screenshot straight out of the custom cookbook I created for her personalized plant-powered meal plan.
- 1 banana, ripe and peeled
- 2 apples, cored and chopped
- 1 tbsp hempseed
- 1 zucchini, coarsely chopped without stem
- 1 c. spinach
- 1 c. frozen raspberries
- 1/2 – 1 c. almond milk (unsweetened) or water
- Blend the banana, apples, zucchini, hempseed, and enough of the liquid to allow the blades to move smoothly until the mix is creamy.
- Add the spinach and the rest of the liquid to the banana mix, and blend until smooth.
What to Eat After Your Talk:
To bring yourself back down to earth from a speaker’s high by dissipating the rest of that energy, eat something hearty and grounding like this.
